Pigeon Hole Press is thrilled to announce the release of four new editions by Darius Airo. In his second collaboration with the studio, Airo spent months experimenting with aquatint and the various line qualities achieved through hard and soft ground etching. Trial and error culminated in the creation of two plates true to the artist’s sensibilities: butterflies and flowers. Airo and the studio opted to have each plate printed in both black and dark green, resulting in four unique small editions.
Deepening his engagement with etching, Airo was intrigued by the possibilities of chine collé, a process in which plates are printed onto very thin sheets of paper which are adhered to sturdier backing sheets. In each of these editions, impressions were pulled on delicate, green-tinted gampi paper cut to the size of the plates. Affixed to bright white rag paper at the time of printing, this colored chine collé preserves the intricate details of Airo’s etched line while providing the whole image a luminous green tone.
